ACCA Introduces Council Membership Restrictions

Thu, 05 Apr 2007

The ACCA, the world’s largest and fastest-growing professional accountancy body, is to open up international restrictions on its council membership.

The body is to alter its membership rules, abolishing the long-standing council rule that at least 12 of the 36 members be UK auditors.

Current members will be asked to voice their opinion on the change and vote either in favour or against. There will also be debates raised on the limiting of council membership to 9, or 12, years, which will be an extension in particular circumstances.

The decision to open up membership comes on the back of an overseas council meeting held in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia .

Gill Ball, ACCA President-to-be said, "We calculated at the time that we managed to engage just over 2,000 members in the space of three days . It’s about hearing what the members want and imploring them to get more engaged."

"Everyone was quite happy with the way in which council did things," she said in response to suggestions that the largely international members want more of a say in the British-based organisation.

Malaysia and Singapore will be the locations for an ACCA team that will embark on a roadshow to campaign on the new open-council membership concept.

She added that future international council meetings for the organisation could not be ruled out, keeping in line with its more global approach.
