Indias accountancy industry is set to expand following the news that the institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) could go ahead with plans to set up 12 centres of excellence for chartered accountants across the country by 2009.
The centres would aim to strengthen the capability, quality and performance of Chartered Accountants in the ever-developing country, while new courses such as general management communication would be introduced once these centres are up and running .
India already has one centre of excellence operating in Hyderbad, which has helped steadily increase the standard of accounting amongst the countrys accountants, while another is near completion in the popular city of Mumbai .
Since 2004, the number of Chartered Accountants in the country has risen by 30 per cent to 140,000, with another 400,000 students currently enrolled in a CA course.
