Accountancy graduates in the UK have ranked training and development as more important than annual salary when it comes to choosing their first employer, according to a new survey .

An online poll by accountancy giant Ernst and Young revealed that just under half (44 per cent) of graduates rate a company’s provision of training and development as the most important factor when considering potential first employers .

The poll, which surveyed over 1,000 graduates, found that the students considered salary and benefits (18 per cent) as the second most important factor, followed by work/life balance (16 per cent), business reputation (12 per cent), people and culture (8 per cent), and ethical and environmental reputation (3 per cent).

Stephen Isherwood, Ernst and Young’s head of graduate recruitment, said: "Despite the many concerns students have when thinking about their future employer, it is still critically important for many of them that their new job offers them opportunities to learn, and to develop their own careers ."
