Two Thirds Of Accountants In UK Seek Switch Abroad

Wed, 30 May 2007

Two out of every three professional accountants in the UK are looking to work abroad, either short-term or for good, according to a new survey .

Readers of the Accountancy Age magazine took part in a study, conducted in conjunction with CPA Australia, which revealed the results were part of a general review of trends in the accountancy profession and offered a brief overlook of ambitions and morale among British accountants.

Over 50 per cent of those polled in the survey said they would choose Australia as their preferred destination given the opportunity .

But the statistic that stood out the most was that more than one in every ten were unfulfilled by their current work

Although the majority said they could recommend a career in accountancy, around 25 per cent admitted they could only ‘possibly’ encourage others to take it up as a profession.

Since Enron, a number of changes have been made to the profession, but regulatory transformation has driven a huge boom in recruitment . The standard pay has increased and the opportunities have expanded, which makes the results from the survey appear even more bizzare.

Perceptions of the profession appear interestingly divided, with around 30 per cent believing that accountants are seen as a ‘necessary evil’, while only slighly more believe themselves and their colleagues are considered as ‘dependable advisers.’
