Commercial skills have been ranked first in a new ICAEW survey of UK financial directors .
The survey by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and Robert Half Finance and Accounting benchmarks competencies needed by ACAs at key stages of their careers and is the first of its kind.
The Career Benchmarking Survey of more than 3,000 members working in the business industry, revealed that financial directors and chief financial officers rank commercial acumen and leadership as most important skills in their careers .
More than 2000 (73 per cent) FDs and CFOs believed commercial skills were crucial and 61 per cent ranked leadership as the main skill required for their position.
Commercial skills, along with technical ability and communication, were regarded as the most important skills by respondents who were currently working their way up to the position of finance manager .
An overwhelmingly 91 per cent of tax specialists thought technical ability was the most important skill required to fulfil this role.
In all, 23 per cent of FDs polled thought commercial skills were most important; closely followed by communication skills at 22 per cent and technical ability at 20 per cent.
