Deloitte Questions Plans To Abolish UK Degree System

Thu, 25 Oct 2007

Accounting firm Deloitte has questioned the proposal by the Burgess Group to phase out degree classifications in the UK .

The compay, which claims to be Britain’s largest private sector graduate employer, stated that recommendations to scrap the degree system would make assessing graduate candidates a more difficult task .

However, Deloitte does see merit in a higher education achievement report (HEAR) as the key vehicle for measuring and recording student achievement, especially for those who just miss out on a high level degree .

Sarah Shillingford, Deloitte graduate recruitment partner said: "The current grade classification system does make it easier to differentiate between prospective employees ."

Deloitte currently receives over 15,000 applications for 1,400 graduate and undergraduate jobs "which are assessed across a range of criteria", according to Shillingford.

"One of these criteria is for students to achieve a 2:1 degree, which then provides students with clear and transparent information about our selection process," she added.

"Whilst we are not in favour of the removal of the degree classification system, the Higher Education Achievement Report may be useful when assessing students who narrowly miss out on achieving a higher degree ."
