An increasing number of female employees at some of the top accounting and finance firms are being promoted to higher positions, according to a report by Accountancy Magazine.
The publication found nearly a quarter of internal partner promotions at the Big 4 accountancy firms involved women this year.
Top of the quartet for female promotions is PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), with 17 women promoted out of a total of 58 appointments (29 per cent).
KPMG came second, with promotions for eight female employees out of 31 (26 per cent), while Ernst and Young promoted eight women out of a total of 36 (22 per cent).
Deloitte came in last with only seven women promoted out of 42 appointments (17 per cent), but the firm insisted the issue was important to it and was taking "long-term steps" to improve the figures.
PwC has further boosted its credentials by announcing the appointment of two new female partners to its government and public sector practice.
Fleur Bothwick, director of diversity and inclusiveness at Ernst and Young said the firm has set itself a target for 20 per cent female representation at partner level by 2011.
