UK graduates seeking accountancy jobs in 2008 are set to face increased competition and a "tougher" market than last years graduate students, a recruitment expert has claimed.
Speaking to the Financial Times, graduate recruitment partner at accountancy firm Deloitte, Sarah Shillingford, said the firm had recorded a 22 per cent increase in applicants for its programme.
She explained: "Economic uncertainty has led some graduate recruiters to reduce the number of jobs they have available. This leads to greater demand for the roles on offer ."
Shillingford added that this has led to many students, who are aware of the increasing competition, applying well in advance for the vacancies .
According to the FT, the banking and finance industry has previously remained confident about the effects of the current conditions in the economy, insisting that demand for their services will rise as a result of economic instability.
The National Statistics' Economic and Labour Market Review found that the financial services sector experienced the largest levels of growth during 1996 - 2006 than any other UK business sector.
