Employees in the accounting industry are receiving record salaries due to the current shortage of skilled workers in the sector, new research has revealed.
A survey conducted by accountancy firm Robert Half found that between 2006 and 2007 salaries for an accounts assistant rose by 25 per cent, reaching an average of £19,500 at the start of the year.
However, the Global Financial Salary Guide, also found revealed that the increases for seasoned accountants are even more significant, with a chief financial accountant earning an average of £80,000 after just six years in the industry.
Phil Sheridan, the firms UK managing director, said: "New regulations in the industry have resulted in a need for more professionals and have in many ways created a level playing field where both entry-level and seasoned professionals have the same opportunities to thrive and benefit financially."
A recent study by Accountancy Age showed that accounting is the most sought-after degree in 2008 and that accountancy firms are planning to maintain or increase their intake of graduates this year.
