Consumer bodies have criticised plans to allow the payment of tax by credit card, warning it will only intensify the debt crisis.
Draft legislation published last Thursday will enable taxpayers to pay their tax with credit cards for the first time.
Speaking to the Times, James Ketchell from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, said: "On one hand it is a modern way to pay, but for the many who are over-indebted, it might be a temptation too far to use credit to pay their tax bill ."
HM Revenue and Customs said it would be 'circumspect' in the way it offered the credit card service, while advisers have raised doubts over the proposal by expressing their concern about the safety of credit card data .
