UK Accountants Under Pressure From Overseas Rivals

Thu, 03 Jan 2008

British accountants could find themselves being regarded as second choice to workers in different countries on new jobs, according to the Daily Telegraph .

The Resident Labour Market Test currently means UK firms must advertise vacancies in Britain for a number of weeks before they can be offered to people residing outside the EU.

However, the newspaper reports that the test could be cancelled from July, but only for jobs with annual salaries in excess of £40,000, meaning both accountancy and law jobs would certainly be affected.

James Clappison, a Conservatory MP, commented, "This plan allows employers to bypass British workers. The question the government must answer is how does this help British workers to get British jobs?"

The news comes after an announcement was made by Richard Lambert - head of the Confederation of British Industry comma - that a number of firms favour hiring staff from overseas due to them being more skilled than UK graduates .

Lambert said that firms can "perfectly well recruit them elsewhere" if British workers are not of a suitable standard.
