A petition to have the term accountant legally recognised has been given the full backing of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) one of the UKs leading accountancy bodies.
ACCA member Alan Shooter has posted a petition on the Number 10 website which has so far attracted over 4,000 signatures.
Mr Shooter said the decision to lodge the petition was due because of his strong feeling about "unqualified accountants, tax and financial advisers " who provide a service to businesses and the public.
He argued that such professionals "need to be regulated" with full legal recognition of the term accountant .
Andrew Harding, managing director of finance and operations for the ACCA described the petition as "a very important issue for ACCA members and students alike".
A survey by the ACCA and the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies found that 93 per cent of respondents in the industry would support a campaign to get legal recognition for the term.
