Accountancy graduates should consider applying for jobs at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if they find it hard securing a position within the private sector, an accountant has suggested.
The turmoil in the UKs financial markets is causing many potential accountants to consider postponing workplace applications.
But in a report by the Belfast Telegraph, private practice accountant Adrian Huston said graduates in such positions could do well to apply to work for the government.
In order to work for HMRC, applicants must have a 2.2 degree at least, the report states, although "an alternate to these degrees is a professional accountancy qualification - Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Institute of Chartered Accountants or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants ".
Huston added that a job in the public sector will certainly appear attractive to many concerned about being the first one in and last one out of a private company .
