Accountancy is fast becoming the top choice of profession among graduates in the UK, according to financial services firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) .
A recent report by the firm found that despite the negative stereotypes often attributed to accountancy, the number of graduates enquiring about accounting-related work is growing.
Sonja Stockton, head of student recruitment at PwC, said the company has seen a significant rise in the number of graduate applicants over the last twleve months.
She commented: "In the past accountancy and professional services may have played second-best to City careers .
"But with 50 per cent more applicants than at this time last year and the fantastic response to our employability events on-campus, we could be seeing a renaissance for the profession."
PwC was recently voted employer of the year for the fifth year running in the Times Graduate Recruitment Awards, outranking a number of other City employees.
The Big 4 firm hired 1,200 UK graduates in 2007 to help fill positions in its five key businesses and is planning to take on a further 1,000 graduates next year.
