This years accountancy graduates face more competition than ever for jobs due to the current economic climate, recruitment specialists have revealed.
Darius Norell, founder of Real World graduate recruitment agency, said that despite Big 4 firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst and Young continuing their graduate recruitment schemes, many firms within the banking and finance sector have slowed recruitment or stopped it completely.
Mike Bernard, spokesman for recruitment website Milkround.co.uk, said: "There are clear signs graduates will have to be more savvy than ever in their hunt for work and not rely on the usual high numbers of vacancies available in previous years."
But according to Charlie Ball, deputy director of research at the Higher Education Careers Service Unit, graduates with accountancy skills will be valued.
She claimed accountants will be in demand to help "pick up all the pieces" of the fall-out from the current economic turmoil.
