Accountancy graduate recruitment is becoming more competitive as jobs in the accountancy sector grow in popularity, a new report has revealed.
According to the Times, the economic recession is forcing many graduates to turn their attention away from major financial institutions and towards areas such as accountancy and law, which have seen a surge in graduate job applications.
As a result, the newspaper suggests accountancy graduates could face some stiff competition in 2009, but adds that those with a specific accountancy degree could be better placed to land a job than graduates coming from a finance background.
Ian Powell, UK chairman and senior partner of Big 4 accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, said. "We've seen a huge increase already this year and, going by the attendance at our on-campus events, we expect this to continue."
"Clearly the downturn is encouraging more graduates to reassess their priorities and look for professional skills and training, which will equip them for recession as well as growth periods."
