Accounting and finance professionals should not be afraid to apply for jobs in new sector, according to an industry commentator.
Paul Goodman, writer for Accountancy Age, said that while the recession has created greater competition within the UK employment market, there is still strong demand among companies for skilled professionals.
But he claimed that the ability to change profession depends on the skills possessed by each individual, with management, leadership and process skills generally valued by all-sector recruiters .
"Many argue that sector knowledge is a disadvantage, fresh thinking applicants are not tainted with stereotypical views," he commented.
"The point is often forcibly made that finance skills are portable. For an intelligent qualified accountant picking up the nuance of a sector quickly is a reasonable expectation."
Colin Howe, president of chartered accountant association the UK200Group, recently claimed that the accountancy jobs sector is likely to remain relatively stable over the next decade.
