The government may not have enough accountants to cope with the financial downturn, a new report has warned.
The report from the Treasury sub-committee said that ever-increasing demands on the department by events such as the nationalisation of Northern Rock and the £500 billion bailout of the UK banking sector have not been helped by wide scale staff reductions.
It stated that staff numbers play an important role in the delivery of services and that a continued drop in the number of accountants could leave the Treasury's organisations "unable to provide the required economic support and management during the economic downturn ".
"We recommend that the government reconsider any planned further headcount reductions in the Treasury group in the light of the demands on the Group of the economic downturn," the report added.
The government recently confirmed that the UK is now in a recession, with latest figures from the National Office of Statistics showing that the economy shrank by 1.5 per cent between October and December from the previous three months.
