The public sector has become the second biggest employer of accountants, according to new research.
A study by contractor services provider Giant group revealed the public sector now employs 37.1 per cent of accountancy contractors in the UK an increase of 3.2 per cent from the last quarter of 2008.
The research also showed that just over one in every three accountants (68 per cent) in the public sector expects their income to rise over the next 12 months, despite the on-going financial downturn.
Matthew Brown, managing director of Giant, said: "Accountants within the Treasury have obviously seen a massive increase in their workload in the wake of the banking crisis. Boosting skills in-house isn't an option short-term."
He added that firms finance departments will play "a frontline role" in dealing with the impact of the credit crunch.
Meanwhile, a new sustainability framework announced by the International Federation of Accountants is encouraging Britains accountants to help make their companies more aware of environmental issues.
According to the organisation, a commitment to sustainability can help businesses improve services, motivate staff, lower costs, and also enhance their reputation.
