Accountants in the UK are set to play a bigger role in providing tax credits advice, particularly to married couples, an industry expert has claimed.
Mark Lee, chairman of the Tax Advice Network, said that a recent Civitas report on problems in the tax credits system highlighted more accountants advising couples on the subject.
He explained: "More and more accountants will find themselves having to advise on tax credits ."
"Although their motivation for doing so will be to assist clients in securing the levels of tax credits to which they are 'entitled', it could also lead to them being asked about the impact on tax credits claims if a couple marry."
But Lee added that accountants have traditionally not advised on benefits as it is "not cost-effective" for them to do so and they are not familiar with "all the rules".
