Accountants are still the number one source for business advice, according to new research.

A survey by Mgr, the accounting division of Atf Business Advisers and hlw McCombie Commercial Lawyers, revealed that over a third (38 per cent) of company owners would seek help from their accountant before anyone else, the highest score for any group.

The research also found that business owners are more likely to seek advice from their wife, husband or partner than non-executive directors, with 15 per cent reaching out to their partners compared to 13 per cent who ask seek advice from company directors .

Jo Haigh, partner and head of Corporate Finance at Atf, explained that this is because business people are looking for two different kinds of advice.

She commented: "Owner-managers still want the sound 'How is my business doing?' advice that they can rely on from their accountant, and the 'How am I doing?' advice that they have always relied on from their partners."

Last month the chief executive of the International Association of Bookkeepers said that firms are increasingly looking to employ accountants and bookkeepers during the economic recession in an attempt to keep a closer eye on their finances .

In addition, the Association of Charted Certified Accountants revealed in April that around two thirds (63 per cent) of businesses across the globe will be looking to recruit more accounting and finance professionals in the near future.
