The level of demand for forensic accountancy skills in the UK could rise significantly over the next few years as a result of the economic downturn, according to one expert.
Alex Plavsic, who was recently appointed head of forensic practice at accountancy giant KPMG UK, said that many cases of fraud which have been taking place during the recession will soon be uncovered by companies across the country.
He explained: "With the full scale of recession-related fraud and litigation yet to unfold, there is no doubt that forensic skills will be much in demand in the coming years."
Mr Plavsic has taken over the role previously held by Adam Bates, who has moved on to become KPMG's UK head of risk and compliance, although he remains the company’s global chairman of forensic.
Earlier this year, accounting firm BDO Stoy Hayward warned that the total number of fraud cases in the UK could treble as the recession continues.
According to research by the firm, the total value of reported fraud in the first half of 2009 amounted to £960 million, nearly equalling the figure for the whole of 2008.
