The government and accountancy industry bodies should do more to promote qualified accountants ahead of unqualified rivals.
That is the view of the UK200 Group, the leading UK member association of independent chartered accountants and lawyers .
The group is concerned by the fact that there are an increasing number of unqualified accountants in the UK offering substandard advice to clients.
It wants accountancy institutes to do more to promote their members and highlight the benefits of properly-qualified professionals, and is also calling for government action to regulate or shut down unqualified operators.
Jonathan Russell, managing partner at ReesRussell and vice-president of the UK200 Group, said: "The institutes the ACCA and the ICAEW need to do more to promote the brand so we have a situation whereby just as most people wouldnt use a travel agent that wasnt ABTA regulated, they wouldnt use an accountant that is not regulated."
"The burden of regulation on small accountancy firms is now such that some are seriously considering whether they want to be regulated," he added.
