The total number of accountancy professionals registered with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) surpassed membership of the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) for the first time last year.
According to the latest survey of accountancy by the Professional Oversight Board, ACCA global membership rose from 131,398 in 2008 to137,233 in 2009, surpassing ICAEW membership which increased to 134,698 from 132,411.
The survey revealed that compound annual growth across the six main institutes was 3.4 per cent between 2004 and 2009.
During that five year period the ACCAs growth was 5.6 per cent, while the ICAEW grew by just 1.2 per cent. The latter was also less than CIMAs compound growth (4.2 per cent) and the ICAS (2.8 per cent).
The research also showed that UK membership for the ICAEW grew 1.5 per cent in 2009 to 114,468, while ACCA members rose 1.9 per cent year-on-year to 68,907.
