Accountancy Recruitment Levels Down For Second Successive Month

Thu, 27 May 2010

Recruitment in the accountancy sector declined for the second month in a row in April, according to new figures.

Data from recruitment agency the Ashdown Group revealed that the accountancy jobs market shrunk by 3.53 per cent last month, following a 2.14 per cent fall in March 2010.

The fall in the number of accountancy jobs available in the UK over the last two months comes after a 10.63 per cent growth in the level of vacancies during February.

John Lynes, director at the Ashdown Group, which specialises in marketing, accountancy, IT and HR recruitment, said that the accountancy jobs sector has been the weakest of the four over the past nine months, but has also been the least volatile.

Despite this, he said the April figures were unexpected as companies usually recruit in April to help cope with heavy workloads in their finance departments.

He added that the accountancy job market is likely to "remain static" for the remainder of 2010 as there is unlikely to be any real growth in the British economy.

Mr Lynes’ comments are in contrast to those from recruitment firm Robert Walters, which claims it has witnessed an upswing in the number of accounting jobs available this year, and expects opportunities for accountants in financial services to increase during the rest of 2010.
