PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the worlds second largest accountancy firm, has revealed ambitious plans to have half of its partnership made up of women or people from an ethnic background.
Ian Powell, the firms UK chairman and senior partner, said he wants to set an "aspirational goal" of rebalancing the partner proportion so that between 40 and 50 per cent of partners are female and/or are from an ethnic background over the next decade.
He said: "At the moment our partner proportion [female to male] is about 13 per cent to 14 per cent and we want to rebalance that."
"We know that 50 per cent of business start ups are now by women or ethnic minorities. We have all that talent that is being lost to the business. There is a fantastic workforce not being utilised."
Powell added that one of the major challenges was convincing women to come back to the workplace following a break for children and then motivating them to move up the career ladder, although PwC said this is something it intends to focus on in the future.
