Social Media Ignored By Accountants When Luring Clients

Tue, 24 May 2011

A new study has found that less than one in ten UK accountants use social media to attract clients.

Over three-quarters (78 per cent) of the 99 firms polled by YouGov for CCH said word-of-mouth was still the top method used by accountancy professionals to bring in new clients, followed by personal networking (40 per cent). Only 9 per cent of respondents said social media.

Similarly, 80 per cent of clients said they find accountants through traditional methods such as recommendations.

At its recent annual conference, CCH said that even with the vast technological advances, "traditional" and "conventional" methods such as face-to-face meetings continue to dominate the way accountants lure in new clients.

The survey also revealed that 38 per cent of firms are not likely to make the move to digital paperless offices anytime soon, while 64 per cent said they were not interested in switching to cloud computing .

Cathy Wolfe, CEO of CCH parent company Wolters Kluwer, said social media and online products would increase as iPads became more popular and more clients moved to cloud computing in the future.

CCH is the only global provider to specialise in providing information, software and services to tax and accounting professionals in business and practice.
