Accountancy firms are the top graduate recruiters in the UK, according to a new report by High Fliers Research.
The market research company compiled a list of the firms that take on the most graduates each year. The list was headed by accounting and auditing giants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Deloitte and KPMG, who each recruit between 900 and 1,200 graduates annually.
Richard Irwin, head of student recruitment at PwC, said: "We've seen early applications to the firm skyrocket this year because students wanted to be first in line for the jobs as soon as they were created."
He added that competition for places has intensified due to a "pool" of graduates from 2009 returning to the job market, but stressed that the firm still has 600 vacancies remaining.
According to the High Fliers report, the number of positions open to graduates is up 12.6 per cent from the same period last year. However, there are still 6 per cent fewer vacancies being offered by the larger recruiters compared to 2007.
Martin Birchall, Managing Director of High Fliers Research, said: "The class of 2011 will be disappointed to hear that graduate recruitment has yet to return to the pre-recession levels seen in 2007, especially as there are an estimated 50,000 extra graduates leaving university in 2011 compared with four years ago."
